Will the United States Stand Forever?
Although it often seems the political landscape in our country is tumultuous, the last few generations of Americans have been blessed to know only one government and to see executive power peacefully transferred to rivals. Although that has been our reality, nations come and go all the time. Even today, many around the world have seen their governments overthrown, their leaders killed, and their land occupied by foreign forces.
Throughout the history of the world, there have been many mighty nations rise and fall. Consider the ancient kingdoms of Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome. In their prime, the people of these nations thought they would endure forever. But now, if it weren’t for a few artifacts and historical records, you’d scarcely know they once “ruled the world.”
At Baker Heights, we just finished a sermon series on Daniel. Daniel witnessed, in person and prophetically, the rise and fall of several of these political super powers. He understood this important truth, “The Most High God is ruler over the realm of mankind, and He sets over it whomever He wishes” (Daniel 5:21). He also understood, the only Kingdom that will last forever is the Kingdom of God (Daniel 7:13-14).
The United States of America will not last forever. The only kingdom that will last forever is not of this earth (John 18:36), it is the kingdom of God – the church of Christ (Mark 9:1; Acts 2; Colossians 1:13).
Although we may enjoy living in the United States, we shouldn’t get too attached to this (or any) country. This country may end when the Lord returns, or it may topple sooner. But one way or the other, we need to remember that God is in control and those who are faithful to Him have absolutely nothing to worry about!
Which is why seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33) should be our only concern.
I love you and God loves you,
