Why Election Season is Your Special Opportunity to Shine
Yesterday I read an excellent blog post by brother Chris McCurley entitled, “What Matters Most: Some Guiding Principles for the Christian Voter.” I would also like to offer some thoughts on the subject as well.
Every day presents a unique opportunity for the church to shine (Philippians 2:15) and be the light of the world (Matthew 5:14); election season is no exception. In fact, it presents some extremely unique opportunities for Christians.
1. An Opportunity to Show Your Hope – The hope Christians possess should be obvious to anyone who spends time around us (1 Peter 3:15). If we exude despair and hopelessness, acting as if our entire existence is riding on an election, we show ourselves to be no different than those of the world. But, if we show those around us that our “hope is built on nothing less than Jesus Christ,” we demonstrate that we are but “aliens and strangers” in this world (1 Peter 2:11).
2. An Opportunity to Show Your Priorities – Few things express your priorities like those whom you elect to represent you. As brother McCurley points out in his post, “Where we stand on abortion matters more than where we stand on alternative energy. Where we stand on gay marriage matters more than where we stand on the environment. Where we stand on human cloning and harvesting human embryos matters more than where we stand on foreign policy. Moral recession is much more costly and has far more devastating effects on society than an economic recession.” When you elect someone for economic reasons, instead of moral reasons, you are showing the world (and God) your priorities.
3. An Opportunity to Show Your Love – Above all things, brethren, let’s remember to show our love. Paul says, “And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:3). I have seen brethren, on both sides, forget that this is an opportunity to show the world how much we love one another (John 13:35). Show your love for one another, even those with whom you disagree, and show your Love for the Lord this election season (Matthew 22:37-39).
Remember to let your light shine today and every day. Remember, above all things, to bring glory and honor to God in the way you vote and the way you conduct yourself (1 Corinthians 10:31).
I love you and God loves you,
Wes McAdams
